CHILE: Friendlier relations with Peru and Bolivia

With the election this year of three new presidents in the south-western corner of Latin American, relations in the region appear to be warming. Chile, traditionally at odds with both Bolivia and Peru, appears to be adopting a new policy of good neighbourliness. The immediate fruits of this rapprochement look set to be a free trade agreement with Peru and associate membership of the Andean Community (CAN), a regional organisation from which it withdrew in 1976.
